Objective: 

This course will enable the students to

  1. understand the concept of language background
  2. become sensitive towards the language diversity that exists in the class room
  3. discuss the nature of classroom discourse and develop strategies for using oral language in classroom
  4. understand need and importance of reading comprehension and writing in specific content areas
  5. discuss interplay of language and society
  6. discuss the functions of language in human life
  7. explain language and speech disorders and suggest remedial measures

CO 181: Examine the different concepts related to language, language use and usage.

CO 182: Explain the concept and importance of listening and speaking skills and sub-skills, process and strategies of teaching listening.

CO 183: Differentiate between home language and school language, formal and informal language and oral and written language.

CO 184: Value the role of classroom, discourse in development of oral proficiency; examine theoretical perspective on language deficits and justify discussion as a tool of learning.

CO 185: Explain the concept and importance of reading skills ans sub skills, types of reading, skill of writing and process and strategies of teaching writing.

CO 186: Contribute effectively in course- specific interaction.

  • Language skills (LSWR): meaning, concepts, importance, co-relation, methods and techniques
  • Listening skills: Difference between hearing and listening; the listening process, principles of listening, sub-skills of listening, strategies of teaching listening.
  • Speaking skill: Spoken vs. written discourse, principles of speaking, sub-skills of speaking, strategies of teaching speaking, techniques to develop speaking of learners, functions of speaking

Language Skills (Reading & Writing)
  • Reading skill: Approaches to teaching reading, Components of reading, reading comprehension, strategies for reading comprehension, consonants, vowels, words, sentences, silent reading, imitation reading and loud reading.
  • Writing skill: Process of writing, coherence and cohesion, writing strategies

Sessional work (Any One):

  1. Discuss with students and find out the different languages they speak, prepare a plan to use multilingualism as a teaching strategy
  2. Identify speech defects of primary level students and plan remedial strategy
  3. Organize an activity-based game to motivate students for creative questioning
  4. Close and critical reading/ discussion in small groups
  5. Conduct a survey in a secondary school to study academic achievement in overall or in specific subject of diverse linguistic students.
