The world is changing at a very rapid pace and every individual needs to be prepared to face unknown and unprecedented challenges of the times. Children are our future. Teachers have a vital role in fostering curiosity and creativity, and empowering students to solve problems related to their own survival and, the society they live in.

However, with the fast-changing world, the paradigms of education especially, teaching and learning, have also changed tremendously. Owing to this, the roles of, and expectations from, teachers havechanged to a great extent.

Teachers have a great responsibility of equipping and preparing the future generation to face unpredictability and change in every sphere of life.To do well in their new roles, they need the knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivation and support for their own personal and professional growth and development.

Recognizing this need the Department of Education at the IIS University was established in 2016 and- since then –it hasbeen imparting dynamic, need- based, quality education topre-service (prospective) teachers at the undergraduate level.

The focus is on preparingresponsible, confident and reflective practitioners, who can contribute meaningfully to the learning and development of upper primary and secondary school students; help themlive and prosper in this day and age; and, prepare them for thetimes to come as well.

The Four-Year (Eight Semesters), B.Sc./B.A.-B.Ed. Course offers 270 Credits and comprises a combination of Foundation Courses, Electives, Education Courses, besides Campus and Extra Curricular Activities.

The curriculum is so designed as to give the student-teachers an understanding of:

• the aims and objectives of education, in general, and school-education in particular
• the need and importance of life-long learning in today’s times
• their role and responsibilities as teachers in the existing social, cultural and political contexts and their contribution in the field of education towards the larger purpose of nation- building
• the nature of disciplines; the school-subjects; the pedagogic processes; and, the way to link knowledge with community-life
• the manner in which to engage with diverse students, schools and communities
• the policies, cultures and practices for promoting equality, equity and sustainable development at different levels

The modes of learner-engagement include face-to-face and online lectures, discussions; school-internships, observations, individual projects/records and reports, case studies, class assignments, sessional work, use of library and ICT resources and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

The interactive processes integrated into the curriculum not only fostercritical and creative thinking in the students but also strengthentheir communication and collaborative skills as well.

The Department has well-qualified and experienced facultymembers who take up research projects as well as engage in professional dialogue with other stakeholders in the field of education from time to time. They also keep abreast with the latest developments in the field using the rich library resources available to them.
